Everyone wants 2017 to be a better year than 2016, and for this club, a good way to start would be to clear up all the confusion that there's been regarding our submission policy. If we can have that cleared up, then we can get submissions coming in again, and keep the club a little more active than it's been for the past year. So I've come up with a plan that I'll lay out here, for you all to give your feedback on. I'd like to put it to a vote, too, to see what you all think.
Before the actual proposal though, I think it's important to establish the objective of the LegoFanClub on DeviantArt. Obviously the main objective of the club is to give its members a place where they can show off their creations to other Lego enthusiasts, and see other people's creations as well. But I think the club is also here to showcase the awesome creations to people who aren't in the club.
Now, if someone is looking on DeviantArt for Lego creations, what are they going to be looking for? Chances are, to be completely honest, they're not going to be looking for things like minifigure portraits, or pictures of official sets. They'll be looking for MOC's (My Own Creation, or custom, original models made by Lego fans). And so it follows that that's the sort of thing the club should be focusing on.
The club does have a set of rules in place to help regulate the creations submitted, but these rules are a little unclear and vague, so it's about time that they be revised and clarified, just so everyone knows what's what.
The first rule is that all submissions must be true Lego only. So firstly, we must decide what will be counted as falling under the category of true Lego. Just things made purely from Lego bricks? Anything made by the Lego company? Anything related to or about Lego?
Obviously anything that has nothing to do with Lego can't be accepted. I just finished declining several drawings of characters from Guardians of the Galaxy. But also in the submission box are some drawings of Ninjago and Nexo Knight characters.
I propose that we create new folders in the club for submitting to. The main folder would be for MOC's built using Lego Bricks or Lego Digital Designer, and we would have other folders dedicated to things like drawings specifically related to Lego, Lego products, and perhaps one for pictures of minifigures alone.
I also propose that we amend the policy regarding "true Lego" to something similar to the following.
"The subject of submissions must be made from unmodified products of the Lego Company only. Modification includes but is not limited to painting, modifying, or breaking any Lego pieces. In the case of drawings, the subject must be of something made by the Lego Company. The subject of submissions must also not contain any imitation brands, including but not limited to Mega Bloks, Kre-o, K'nex, and Brickarms. Submissions must be featured on DeviantArt, and may not have their subject hosted anywhere else. (For example: Youtube)"
This may be revised, simplified, and edited before becoming official. This and the other rules are of course at the discretion of the LegoFanClub staff.
Rules 2 through 5, I propose remain the same.
I hope you all will like this idea, because I'm looking forward to implementing it and getting our club that much more organized. But, if you like it or you don't, please let me know what you think. I'm open to hearing other ideas and amendments or suggestions you might have.
Here's to a great 2017!
Playing well since 1995,
